Public Holiday: 08th May 2019

National elections will take place on 08 May 2019

President Ramaphosa has declared the day a public holiday to allow those who wish to vote the opportunity to do so.

Payment: All employees are paid as they would normally be paid for 08 May as if they were at work for that day.

Overtime: If employees work on 08 May 2019 they are, depending on your industry, paid double time.

Payment for the public holiday is made regardless of whether the employee votes or not.

Dagga decriminalised - what happens now at work?

A few hours ago the Constitutional Court ruled unanimously that the ban on the private use and cultivation of dagga at a private home is unconstitutional.  It means you can grow, and use, dagga in your own home only.  Cultivating dagga for personal consumption only is permissible.  This will continue until the relevant laws are amended.
