Domestic Workers increase: 5% and National Minimum Wage

As of 01 January 2019, the minimum wage for domestic workers is:

Minimum wage for Domestic Workers working MORE than 27 ordinary hours per week in Metropolitan Areas:

- Hourly Rate R13.69
- Weekly Rate R616.03
- Monthly Rate R2 669.24

Minimum Wage for Domestic Workers working LESS than 27 ordinary hours per week in Metropolitan Areas:

- Hourly Rate R16.03
- Weekly Rate R432.78
- Monthly Rate R1 875.22

If your domestic is already earning above the minimum, the increase is 5% based on the actual wage paid to the domestic worker.

The new National Minimum Wage does complicate things, particularly for domestic workers earning less than R15.00 per hour after the increase.  Under the National Minimum Wage Act, domestic workers’ minimum wage is R15.00 an hour (Not R20.00 per hour that is applicable for everybody else).

The increase will apply, and increased to meet the National Minimum Wage.

Both increases are applicable on 01 January 2019.
