Mining Charter: the next episode: Minister Zwane freezes mining transactions.

On 19 July 2017, Mineral Resources Minister Zwane gazetted a moratorium restricting the granting of new mining and permitting rights as well as the transfer of mineral rights between companies.

The freeze is in South Africa’s best interests.
And he is doing this “having regard to the national interest and the need to promote the sustainable development of the nation’s mineral resources“.  There has been no elaboration on how freezing the already beleaguered mining industry is in the country’s best interests, nor how it promotes any sort of sustainable development. Metal Industry Strike: threat of a threat of a strike

At the Press Conference today NUMSA did everything short of announcing a strike in the Metal and Engineering Sector, but did warn that the “sector is on the verge of a full-blown strike” and called on “members both old and young in the industry to unite and be ready to declare a sustained war to defend their gains, to improve their wages and to secure the future of the next generation of workers“. NUMSA Press Conference - Metal and Engineering Strike

NUMSA is hosting a press conference tomorrow (18 July 2017) specifically to address the looming Metal And Engineering Industries strike, and SAA.

Should the union announce the strike and present the employers with their required 48 hours written notice of a protected strike, the strike would take place from the 20th July 2017.
